This week I did something I've never done before: I took a day trip to New York! I wanted to attend the BILD Expo sponsored by B&H Photo with dozens of equipment experts doing demos, well-known photographers giving lectures, and more opportunities to learn how to get better at photographing my clients. It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up!
But the hotel rates in Manhattan are insane, and I didn't want to spend a fortune. So I got creative: I got up early Tuesday morning, and took Amtrak from little old Mount Joy, PA to Penn Station in Manhattan. I was hungry, so I went to Liberty Bagels on 35th Street near 8th Avenue. What a place! I had the best bagel, and even took some home to share with Brenda.
After breakfast, it was off to Javits Center for the show. I met experts from a dozen different equipment brands and learned about the latest equipment and techniques. Then I headed upstairs for some presentations, where I listened intently to Mark Mann explain his approach to photographing celebrities. He had some great stories, but the bottom line was that to make a great portrait, you have to connect emotionally with your client. After a long day, I had to catch my train, so I took my new-found knowledge, and after grabbing a couple of slices of NY pizza, I caught my train ride home.
It was an amazing experience spending time with so many talented photographers and other creatives. I learned a lot simply by talking to the other attendees: people from all over the country who share the same passion for photography.
